I want to yearn | Psalm 63:1 Series
"O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek you;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water."
Psalm 63:1
As I look at this verse, I see a man yearning desperately for God. It's a wonderful picture. A wonderful idea. A beautiful prayer. But as I've read it over and over again, I've come to realize that more often than not, I am not praying those words because I feel that way. As if I'm thirsty for God and desperately longing for Him.
As I read it, I am praying that those words will be true for me.
I love God with all my heart, but I don't always feel desperate for Him. As believers we are not in a constant state of feeling and desire and overpowered spirituality. Life gets real, and it gets hectic.
But God in all His glory and majesty should be desired and praised in the midst of even your busiest of days. As I read that verse, It's my lack of yearning that draws me to a place of desperaty.
That's why I love this song so much. A line in the chorus says, " I want to yearn for you." Even when I don't feel that I'm yearning after God, when I come to think of it, I want to be yearning.
One remedy to a lack of longing is praising God. "When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long" (Psalm 32:3). We can't keep silent in worship. And if you don't feel like you're yearning for Him, you can spend some time with Him and pray that you will yearn for Him.
